Tips for Coping with Stress and Anxiety

You can feel anxiety coming on — the nausea, heart palpitations, a knot in the stomach and the inability to relax. Other possible symptoms are dizziness, difficulty sleeping, feelings of panic or fear, and shortness of breath. Living with stress and anxiety can be challenging, but there are many things you can do to help alleviate your feelings of distress.

1. Exercise

Exercise your worries away

When you are feeling anxious, exercising may be the last thing you want to do, but it can ease the symptoms. It releases chemicals in the brain that make you feel better and triggers a calming effect. Plus, in the long term, exercise can boost confidence and provide opportunities for socialization.

Distraction is also key factor; if you are focused on a workout, you aren’t thinking about your worries. It is better to exercise than fixate on things you can’t control that maybe stressing you out.

2. Find the Source

Do you know why you are anxious and stressed out? Is there a specific source for your worries, such as work or family problems? Consider ways to alleviate stress in these area. If possible, ask for help. However, if it is out of your control, take a deep breath and realize you can only do your best.

3. Sleep

It can be hard to get a good night’s sleep when you’re anxious, but try to ensure that you get as much rest as possible. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can trigger anxiety and interrupt sleep cycles. Turn off the computer a couple hours before bed. If you are tossing and turning, it’s okay to get up and read in a chair until you feel sleepy. Turn the clock so it’s facing away from you and avoid the urge to play on your phone.

4. Talk to Someone

Share your concerns with a family member or a friend. They may be able to offer another perspective or help out in your day-to-day life. You could also consider speaking with a professional as a therapist can help you work through your emotional responses and difficult situations. You may also be prescribed medication for reducing feelings of anxiousness.

5. Surround Yourself with Humor and Positivity

It may be hard to always maintain a positive attitude, but try to think positive thoughts as much as possible. Also, do your best to surround yourself with positive people. Finally, reading a funny book or watching a lighthearted comedy are great ways to lift mood and provide a distraction from what’s worrying you.
